Vol. 494 No. 6

Written Answers. - Asylum Applications.

Ceist:

123 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 94 of 7 May 1998, he will provide details of the number of applications for family reunification in his Department; the number of applications made in each of the past five years for which data is available; the number of applications approved in each of the past five years for which data is available; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19044/98]

My Department has recently completed a review of its files in order to compile the information to reply to the Deputy's original question.

The number of applications for family reunification relating to refugees who received status in 1995 and subsequent years is as follows:

Applications

Approved

Refused

Pending

1995

3

3

0

None

1996

7

7

0

None

1997

39

30

9

None

1998

48

17

18

13

The figures relate to the year in which the application for reunification was made and not when status was granted.
To obtain data on applications relating to persons who received status prior to 1996 would involve a disproportionate commitment of resources. My Department has recently put in place arrangements which record the number of applications according to year on an ongoing basis for all persons with refugee status.
