Vol. 495 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Liam Lawlor

Ceist:

422 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will approve the provision of a new national school for Saggart, County Dublin, in view of the substantial growth in population and housing in the locality; and if he will initiate a study of the educational needs of Saggart and the surrounding areas in order to meet future requirements. [19579/98]

The Deputy may be aware that there is one primary school in Saggart, County Dublin, St. Mary's. This is a full range co-educational school with an enrolment of 113 pupils in the last school year. I have received correspondence from the chairman of the board of management in relation to the need for the provision of a new enlarged replacement school building, to provide for increasing pupil numbers.

The planning section of my Department, in conjunction with the school's inspector and the patron, is currently carrying out a review of school accommodation needs in the general area, including Saggart.

I have asked that the review be completed as soon as possible.
