Vol. 495 No. 1

Written Answers. - Local Government Reform.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

64 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to a British publication entitled, Modernising Local Government - A New Ethical Framework; if he is considering the contents of this report and its implications for local government in Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17658/98]

My Department in the normal way received copies of Modernising Local Government — A New Ethical Framework published by the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions, London. This was one of a series of consultation papers issued and was subsequently followed by a White Paper Modern Local Government "In Touch with the People" published by the same Department in July of this year.

As the Deputy will be aware a comprehensive Bill to modernise and reform local government law is being prepared in my Department. It is intended that this will include new ethics provisions for local government. As is usual in such cases developments in other countries will be considered as part of this process.
