Vol. 495 No. 1

Written Answers. - Labelling of Foodstuffs.

Eoin Ryan

Ceist:

124 Mr. E. Ryan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will bring forward legislation to compel breweries to list the ingredients on bottled, canned and kegged beers. [19524/98]

Current rules for the labelling of food and beverages are set down in the European Communities (Labelling, Presentation and Advertising of Foodstuffs) Regulations 1982-1997 implementing EC Directives in this area. Over the years, the EU Commission has not found sufficient support among the member states for proposed amendments making it mandatory to display a list of ingredients for alcoholic beverages. In February 1997, the Commission presented a draft Directive to Council and the European Parliament dealing exclusively with the issue of alcohol ingredient listing. The opinion of the European Parliament on the proposal is still awaited. Ireland has consistently supported the Commission's previous efforts in this area and, subject to the necessary examination of the details I will be urging our EU partners to support the Commission's proposal when it is considered in the Council.
