Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Non-payment of Fines.

Deirdre Clune

Ceist:

304 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the value of a fine is taken into account when a person is being imprisoned for non-payment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19905/98]

The number of days imprisonment to be served in default of payment of a fine imposed by a judge sitting in the District Court is linked to the amount of the fine imposed and such matters are prescribed in Order 23, Rule 7 of the District Court Rules 1997. The days to be served in default of payment of fines imposed by the District Court are set out below:

Value of Fine imposed

Days imprisonment

not exceeding £50

5 days

over £250, not exceeding £250

15 days

over £250, not exceeding £500
