Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools Placement.

David Stanton

Ceist:

409 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason a person (details supplied) in County Cork is not able to secure a place in a second level school in his area; the steps, if any, he will take to enable this pupil to avail of second level education; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20301/98]

I am not aware of the case referred to by the Deputy.

The selection of pupils for enrolment in second level schools is, in the first instance, the responsibility of individual schools. In exceptional circumstances my Department provides assistance to parents who encounter difficulty in securing a school placement.

An education needs questionnaire has been issued to the family in question and this will assist my Department in making appropriate education provision in this case. When a reply is received, every effort will be made to secure a suitable second-level placement as soon as possible.
