Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Seamus Kirk

Ceist:

431 Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for Education and Science if the minor improvements scheme for primary schools will be reconsidered to allow schools under certain enrolment threshold spend money from their annual allocation on work classified as general maintenance, that is, painting; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20467/98]

The devolved grant scheme was introduced to empower boards of management to carry out capital improvement works to their buildings, grounds, services, furnishings and physical education equipment.

Routine maintenance, repair and painting of schools are non-capital works, which should be funded by schools from the standard capitation grant. I am at present considering the future scope of the scheme.
