I propose to take Questions Nos. 85, 86, 87, 89 and 90 together.

I am advised by the military authorities that the military board established by the Chief of Staff in 1997 to undertake a special study of the Reserve Defence Force submitted an interim report to the Chief of Staff earlier this year. It is anticipated that the board's final report will be submitted to the Chief of Staff before the end of this year. It is not the practice to publish reports of boards set up by the Chief of Staff for the purpose of reviewing internal military matters and reporting to him thereon. In the circumstances, neither the interim nor the final report of the military board will be published. To date, the military board has met on a total of 44 occasions with a further two meetings scheduled to take place this week.

The board met with the Reserve Force consultative group on two occasions. These meetings took the form of weekend seminars and it is anticipated that a further such meeting will take place shortly. The joint military/civilian steering group which I set up earlier this year and which has held a total of 16 meetings to date, is tasked with overseeing and guiding the military board review of the reserve. The group submitted an interim report on 30 July 1998 and the final report is due to be submitted in February 1999.

I am advised by the military authorities that the information sought by the Deputy is not readily available in Defence Forces headquarters. However, the information is being compiled and I have arranged to have it forwarded to the Deputy as soon as possible.
