Vol. 495 No. 7

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Personnel.

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

198 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Defence the plans, if any, he has to initiate a form of recognition for those who, while serving overseas, lost their lives other than by way of hostile fire; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21177/98]

As the Deputy is aware, a National Day of Commemoration Ceremony takes place annually. This ceremony commemorates all Irish men and women who died in past wars or while on service with the United Nations. Personnel who die while on overseas service with the United Nations qualify for the posthumous award of the UN medal. This medal is awarded under United Nations Regulations and is specific to the UN mission in which the personnel would have served. Personnel who qualify for the UN medal also qualify for the UN Peacekeepers Medal, the award of which is provided for in Defence Force regulations. In addition, all personnel who die while on overseas service would, subject to the wishes of their next of kin, receive a military funeral in Ireland.

I am satisfied that these measures have appropriately recognised the sacrifices made by personnel in the category referred to by the Deputy.
