Vol. 495 No. 7

Written Answers. - Livestock Testing.

Ulick Burke

Ceist:

275 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will consider the extension of the current 30 days test requirement to 60 days in view of the difficulties and numbers at livestock markets while the current crisis exists in cattle prices; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21386/98]

Because of the continuing brucellosis situation and following extended discussions in the Animal Health Forum it was necessary to introduce a number of remedial measures, including a 30 day pre-movement test for all female cattle and bulls over 12 months of age being moved into or out of holdings, other than direct to a slaughter premises, with effect from 23 February last. All parties involved in the negotiations accept the veterinary advice that these arrangements are essential at this time, particularly in the context of our beef and dairy trades.

In the circumstances it would not be prudent to make any adjustment at this time.
