Vol. 495 No. 7

Written Answers. - Betting Tax.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

383 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Finance if he would consider the case of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 6W and similar persons who are in danger of losing their jobs unless the current betting tax is reduced from 10 per cent to 5 per cent in order to give the industry an opportunity to compete with tax free offshore betting (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21396/98]

While I have noted the contents of the letter referred to by the Deputy, I would like to point out that there is no falling off this year in Exchequer receipts from betting. The receipts to end September 1998 of £40.1 million show an increase of 16.7 per cent over the same period in 1997.

As I have stated in previous replies to similar questions, my officials and those of the Office of the Revenue Commissioners, are closely monitoring all developments in this area.
