Vol. 495 No. 7

Written Answers. - Mental Health Services.

Pádraic McCormack

Ceist:

413 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Health and Children the position regarding his Department's funding for an organisation (details supplied) in County Galway which caters for recovering women alcoholics; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21317/98]

The organisation referred to by the Deputy operates a private facility for people with alcohol related problems. The policy adopted by successive Governments in relation to mental health services, including the treatment of alcohol related problems, is centred on a community based model with in-patient facilities as appropriate. Health boards are developing their alcohol treatment services in accordance with this policy and any available resources will necessarily be channelled towards the enhancement of community oriented services. Nevertheless, a grant of £15,000 was recently provided to this organisation from national lottery funds towards it running costs. The question of providing further financial support for this organisation is essentially a matter for the Western Health Board in the context of its overall priorities for the provision of health services in the area.

I understand that the organisation has recently indicated to the Western Health Board that its premises may be disposed of and I would suggest that, in the circumstances, the organisation might explore further with the board what options might be available.

Since the commencement of the Eastern Health Board's psychological/counselling service in August 1998, 28 people have been referred to the service, of which a small number are in ongoing therapy. There have been two people referred to date who have experienced torture.
