Vol. 495 No. 7

Written Answers. - National Parks.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

559 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the number of licences issued for the operation of jaunting cars in Killarney National Park for each of the past five years; the cost on an annual basis of each licence; the use to which this revenue is put by her Department; the number of licence applications refused; the numbers, if any, subsequently granted on appeal; and if she will make a statement on her Department's view of the efficiency of the jaunting car licence system. [20969/98]

Prior to 1996 licences for jaunting cars were issued by Killarney Urban District Council. The numbers of licences issued by Dúchas, the Heritage Service of my Department for the operation of jaunting cars in Killarney National Park since 1996 were as follows: 1996, 88; 1997, 93; 1998, 90.

The licence fee is £5 per annum.

The revenue received from licence fees is remitted to my Department as appropriations-in-aid. Four licence applications have been refused since 1996, none of which was subsequently granted on appeal.
