Vol. 495 No. 7

Written Answers. - Prisoner Transfers.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

641 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will agree to the deportation request of a person (details supplied). [21934/98]

While it is not the policy of my Department to comment on individual prisoners, I can inform the Deputy that the person referred to is serving a nine year sentence (with the last three years suspended) for a very serious crime and is not due for release until 7 April 2001. He is due to appear in the Court of Criminal Appeal within the next few weeks. Depending on the outcome of the appeal process he may wish to reactivate a request he made under the Transfer of Sentenced Persons Acts, 1995 and 1997 for transfer to his own country. In view of the circumstances I feel it would be inappropriate to accede to a request for deportation.
