Vol. 495 No. 7

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

701 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education and Science the assistance, if any, which can be given to a person (details supplied) in County Kildare who suffers from epilepsy and cerebral palsy and requires additional education at home outside school hours; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21309/98]

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

702 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the application by Scoil San Carló Junior, Confey, Leixlip, County Kildare, for child care assistants; the position in this regard; when the school will be authorised to appoint child care assistants; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21310/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 701 and 702 together.

I understand that my Department has not previously been requested to provide home tuition for the child in question. However, I have asked my Department's inspectorate to investigate and report on the educational needs of the child.
I am aware that the school in question has applied to my Department for child care assistant support. I am currently reviewing provision in the child care area to ensure that all available resources are targeted to maximum effect. I can assure the Deputy that the needs of the school to which he refers will be fully considered in the context of any additional child care provision which may be undertaken.
