Vol. 495 No. 7

Written Answers. - National Irish Bank Investigations.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

71 Ms McManus asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she has received any response from the Revenue Commissioners or the Director of Public Prosecutions to the report of the authorised officer into certain matters involving National Irish Bank and its associated companies; when the final report of the inspectors appointed by the High Court to these companies will be completed; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21629/98]

I have furnished the report of the authorised officer to the High Court inspectors appointed to investigate the affairs of NIB and NIBFS, to the Director of Public Prosecutions and to the Revenue Commissioners for whatever action they deem is appropriate. The DPP's office and the Revenue Commissioners have sought further documentation and information from the authorised officer. The authorised officer, whose investigation is formally completed, has given the DPP's office and Revenue Commissioners every assistance in that regard.

On 30 March 1998 the High Court appointed Messrs. John Blayney and Tom Grace as inspectors to the National Irish Bank Ltd. and the same persons as inspectors to National Irish Bank Financial Services Ltd. on 15 June 1998. The inspectors are answerable to the court for the performance of their duties. Certain of the staff of National Irish Bank have appealed the ruling of the High Court, which determined that the staff were obliged to answer such questions as were put to them by the inspectors. This hearing is pending. Given these developments it is not possible to indicate the date for receipt of the final report of the inspectors.
