Vol. 495 No. 7

Written Answers. - Physical Education Facilities.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

743 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on the extension of time allowed for physical education at primary school level in view of the petition from St. Mary's national school, Blessington, County Wicklow; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21754/98]

The recommended time allocation for physical education in the primary school curriculum is one hour per week. The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment is at present completing a revision of the primary curriculum. The revised documents are due to be presented to me for ratification shortly. Among the matters which I will consider will be the Council's recommended time allocation for all subjects, including physical education. I will announce my decisions on these matters in due course.

A formal representation has not been received from the school authorities of St. Mary's national school, Blessington relating to physical education. However it is understood that the results of a survey which was undertaken in relation to time for physical education by two fifth class students in the school were forwarded to local TDs.
