Vol. 495 No. 7

Written Answers. - Job Losses.

Nora Owen

Ceist:

147 Mrs. Owen asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the position on the job losses in a company (details supplied); the discussions, if any, she has had with the management about the company's future in Ireland; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21973/98]

Last June Motorola announced that it was initiating a major restructuring worldwide resulting in the reduction of its workforce by 10 per cent or 15,000 people. Motorola plans to consolidate manufacturing operations with the emphasis on semiconductors, messaging information and media and cellular.

On 23 June I met with senior management in Motorola in Chicago. I strongly represented the case for the Motorola operations in Dublin and Cork and am confident that these representations have assisted in maximising employment in Ireland. I was assured that notwithstanding the restructuring, both the company's Dublin and Cork operations have a strong future.

Inevitably, on 28 October 1998 Motorola concluded its latest round of restructuring reviews with the announcement of the loss of 125 jobs in Swords. The redundancies will be voluntary, leaving 1,110 jobs on site in Swords. The job losses will be concentrated on indirect workers — management, administration, finance — and manufacturing will be minimally affected. Motorola in Cork will not be affected.
While the job losses are to be regretted, the retention of the vast majority of the Swords jobs is to be welcomed in the circumstances.
