John Gormley

Ceist:

156 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources his views on the fact that the run-off from sewage treatment plants at Osburstown and Leixlip, County Kildare, and the operation of the water supply station at Ballymore Eustace, County Kildare, may be leading to a decline in water quality and a diminution of fish stocks in the Liffey; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21339/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 155 and 156 together.

The reported salmon rod catch on the River Liffey in 1998 was 66 and the reported commercial, i.e. netting catch, was 60.

The Eastern Regional Fisheries Board has regularly stated its concerns about the impact of the Osburstown works, in particular on water quality, and has urged for upgrading works to be carried out.

Plans to upgrade the sewerage works in Osburstown and Leixlip will improve the overall situation.
