Vol. 496 No. 5

Written Answers. - Pesticide Usage.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

10 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the plans, if any, he has to alert farmers to the potential dangers of certain sprays, having regard to the findings of a study undertaken by the Department of Health and Children promotion in University College Galway which suggested that an increase in cancer among farmers may be linked to sprays; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23102/98]

I am aware of the study referred to. I accept there is need for continuing emphasis on training for farmers and farm workers with respect to the safe use of pesticides. In this connection, Teagasc operates a number of training and educational courses for farmers and people who are involved in the application and use of such products. In addition Teagasc has published a voluntary code of good practice, which is available to all farmers, on the handling, application and storage of pesticides on farms.
