Vol. 496 No. 7

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Louis J. Belton

Ceist:

193 Mr. Belton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his Department will include Ballymulvey Road in the Ballymahon sewerage scheme, County Longford. [24117/98]

Having regard to the absence of indications of environmental problems with the current system of sewage disposal in the Ballymulvey Road area and the uneconomic cost of including the area in the proposed Ballymahon sewerage scheme, the local authority has been advised that the proposal cannot be approved.

Local Authority Housing.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

194 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number on the waiting list for local authority housing in each local authority area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24118/98]

Assessments of local authority housing needs in accordance with section 9 of the Housing Act, 1988, are carried out every three years. I have directed that the next assessments be carried out at 31 March next. The assessments will provide details of the extent and nature of housing needs in each local authority area. Comprehensive guidelines have issued to local authorities in a memorandum in relation to the carrying out of the assessments of need for housing accommodation and sites for travellers, and of the number of homeless persons. Copies of the memorandum have been placed in the Oireachtas Library.

Details of the assessment carried out in March, 1996 of housing needs for each local authority are given in my Department's housing statistics bulletin for 1996 which is available in the Oireachtas Library.
