Vol. 496 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Dinny McGinley

Ceist:

294 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will approve an application for a concessionary third assistant teacher in a school (details supplied) in County Donegal. [24087/98]

The school to which the Deputy refers has an authorised staffing in the current school year of a principal and two class teachers. This allocation is based on the school's September 1997 enrolment of 79 pupils. In addition to having the services of a remedial teacher, the school is also involved in the rural phase of Breaking the Cycle pilot initiative. The post of rural co-ordinator of this initiative is based at this school. There does not appear to be a basis for further staffing at this school at this stage. However, I understand that an inspector from my Department recently visited the school. As soon as the inspector's report is received, the staffing levels at the school will again be reviewed. Thereafter, my officials will correspond directly with the managerial authorities of the school in this matter.
