Michael Finucane

Ceist:

279 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the status regarding the introduction of MOT testing in cars. [24762/98]

Following a competitive tendering process, SGS Ireland Limited has today been selected, subject to contract, to provide the national car testing service. In accordance with the terms of the proposed contract, SGS is expected to provide services at some 39 test centres around the country, with a number of mobile test centres. Testing is planned to start on a phased basis from the beginning of the year 2000, commencing with cars which are eight years old or more. Fuller details of the car testing service and the start-up arrangements will be announced as soon as the contract with SGS has been signed.
