Vol. 497 No. 5

Written Answers - Southern Fisheries Board.

Brendan Kenneally

Ceist:

82 Mr. Kenneally asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the reason different rules pertain to the appointment of the eel representative to the Southern Fisheries Board than those pertaining to the salmon representative in view of the fact the salmon representative must be a fisherman with a salmon licence whereas the same conditions do not apply to the eel representative; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25698/98]

The appointment of members and the arrangements for elections to the Regional Fisheries Boards are governed by the terms of the Fisheries Regions (Amendment) Order 1992, Second Schedule. Under this order, the representative of the eel sector must hold a specified eel fishing licence and be entitled to vote in the Regional Fisheries Board elections.

The current representative of the eel sector on the Southern Regional Fisheries Board is the holder of a valid relevant eel fishing licence in the Waterford district.
