Vol. 498 No. 2

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 21 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Perry — the proposed boycott of Carrowreagh national school in County Sligo with effect from January 1999 due to rat infestation and the need for the Minister for Education and Science to outline the timescale involved in the building and opening of the new school; (2) Deputy Gerard Reynolds — the need for the Minister for the Environment and Local Government to provide funding in the 1999 Estimates for the provision of a sewerage scheme facility in Drumsna, County Leitrim; (3) Deputy Hayes — the need for the Minister for Health and Children to establish a national register of practitioners for acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine and to establish national standards for the training of such practitioners; (4) Deputy Stanton — the need for the Minister for Education and Science to introduce a graduated system of entitlement for families with third level students who fail narrowly to qualify for the means tested maintenance grant; (5) Deputy Upton — the need for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to give full details of the nature of the commitment he has given to Deputy Blaney arising from his answer to the Private Notice Questions of 8 December 1998; (6) Deputy McGuinness — the need for the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment to introduce measures to support Kilkenny Textile Mills and to secure the employment of the 80 workers involved; (7) Deputy Broughan — the urgent need to ensure that employment levels at the ISPAT steel plant in Cobh, County Cork, remain at the levels agreed between State agencies and the company in view of current fears of the Irish Steel workforce.

The matters raised by Deputies McGuinness, Upton, Perry and Stanton have been selected for discussion.
