Vol. 498 No. 3

Written Answers - Urban Renewal Schemes.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

134 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if the recent decision by the Government to seek Objective One status for five western counties at EU level has any implications for the dialogue between the Government and EU authorities in relation to a new urban renewal tax designation scheme; if urban areas outside the proposed Objective One region can attain this tax designated status; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27088/98]

The urban renewal tax designation scheme was notified to the EU authorities on the basis of its uniform application throughout the country and is being discussed with the authorities on that basis. The intention is that the scheme will apply in the cities and towns throughout the country where the need for regeneration is most acute, having regard to factors such as the degree of social and economic disadvantage in the areas concerned and levels of physical decay.
