Vol. 498 No. 4

Written Answers. - Departmental Properties.

John Gormley

Ceist:

261 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Finance if he will provide a breakdown of expenditure in relation to the refurbishment of No. 14 Hume Street, Dublin 2, in the period up to and including December 1992; if he has satisfied himself that the money expended on this refurbishment represented good value for money; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27381/98]

In replying to the Deputy's question, it has been assumed that the information sought refers to works carried out at 14 Hume Street by the Commissioners of Public Works during the years 1991 and 1992.

A substantial amount of maintenance work was undertaken during the period referred to in response to a dilapidations claim lodged by the landlord. Much of this work was carried out by staff directly employed by the Commissioners, as part of their normal duties, so the direct labour element was not an additional cost to the State. The total breakdown is as follows:

£

Labour

120,625.28

Materials and work by private contract

99,442.56

Total

220,067.84

The net additional cost to the State at £99,442.56, compares very favourably with the landlord's dilapidations claim, which exceeded £0.5 million.
