Vol. 498 No. 4

Written Answers. - Laser Products.

David Stanton

Ceist:

89 Mr. Stanton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment her views on the dangers of laser pens to the consumer; the guidelines, if any, she has issued in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [27637/98]

My attention was drawn earlier this year to the danger of the use of laser lights by untrained people in the context of a parliamentary question put to the Minister for Health and Children.

The responsibility for making the general public aware of the dangers of exposure to laser lights rests with the Director of Consumer Affairs. I requested the Director of Consumer Affairs to consider the matter and to take whatever measures he considered appropriate.

I am informed by the Office of the Director of Consumer Affairs that inspectors have carried out searches of the Irish market in response to two notifications through the EUs rapid exchange of information system regarding potentially dangerous laser products. They failed to find these products on sale.
