Vol. 498 No. 6

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 21 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Wall — the urgent need to address the serious shortfall in staffing levels in the Kildare Vocational Education Committee scheme; (2) Deputy Gormley — the need for a remedial teacher at St. Brigid's school, Haddington Road, Dublin 4; (3) Deputy Shatter — the shortfall in staffing at St. Munchen's regional maternity hospital in Limerick which resulted in twins born yesterday being transferred to a neonatal unit in Cork and the need for the Department of Health and Children to properly fund our maternity services; (4) Deputy Gerard Reynolds — the need for the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment to clarify the reason the proprietors of Ballinamore textiles in County Leitrim were requested to pay back grant assistance received from the IDA; (5) Deputy Stagg — the effect of the recent and continuing increase in house prices on the ability of local authority tenants to purchase their houses and the need to adjust the house purchase scheme so that the real value rather than the market value is the determining factor in the scheme; (6) Deputy Farrelly — the need for the Minister to provide moneys for the necessary work to St. Mary's special school, Athlumney, Navan, following a decision by the fire officer of Meath County Council to close this school; (7) Deputy Jim Higgins — the need for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to confirm that allegations in newspaper articles concerning the alleged activities during the weekend release of a person (details supplied) transferred to prison in Northern Ireland are being investigated and that the person in question has visited this jurisdiction; (8) Deputy Joe Higgins — the launching of a massive bombing attack on Iraq by the United States and Britain, the potential for appalling casualties among innocent Iraqis in a context where hospitals are desperately short of equipment and medicine due to embargoes and the urgent need for this State to strongly condemn this attack and to call for its immediate end; (9) Deputy Broughan — the urgent need to develop training and urgently upgrade safety and health measures for crane drivers working in the Irish construction industry; (10) Deputy Michael D. Higgins — the decision by Great Britain and the United States to initiate military action against Iraq and its people before the matter of Saddam Hussein's refusal to co-operate with UNSCOM test inspectors was referred to the UN Security Council.

The matters raised by Deputies Gerard Reynolds, Michael D. Higgins, Wall and Gormley have been selected for discussion.
