The Department, in consultation with Sports Council staff, is currently looking at the issue of increasing involvement of young people in recreational sport, particularly in areas of disadvantage. Before finalising any proposals, including the designation of any area for suitable pilot projects, the Department will also be consulting with vocational education committees, local authorities and sporting organisations.
Meanwhile, the Deputy may not be aware that the Department recently agreed a pilot project with the Gaelic Athletic Association for the development of hurling and football in disadvantaged areas. The Knocknaheeny, Mahon, Ballyphehane and Togher areas of Cork city are being considered for inclusion in the pilot project.
