The information requested by the Deputy is not available on a constituency basis.
Of the 359 primary schools in County Cork, 292 schools involving 47,832 pupils have access to a remedial service. There are 67 primary schools in the county, involving 3,951 pupils, which currently do not have access to a remedial teaching service.
I recently announced a major initiative to tackle educational disadvantage at all levels. As part of this initiative, a remedial teacher service will be made available to all primary schools with effect from September 1999. Mainstream schools with a pupil-teacher ratio of below 10:1 and which currently have no remedial teacher may apply for a service where they can demonstrate the particular needs of their pupils.
Details of the 292 primary schools in County Cork which have a remedial service and the 67 schools which are currently without the service are being forwarded to the Deputy.
