Vol. 499 No. 2

Written Answers. - Asylum Applications.

John Gormley

Ceist:

135 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the measures taken to ensure that interpreters available to asylum seekers are independent and professionally qualified; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2299/99]

My Department avails of the services of an agency which provides independent and appropriately qualified interpreters. Training for interpreters is arranged by my Department on a regular basis. This training, which is conducted primarily by the UNHCR, outlines the role of the interpreter/translator and highlights the sensitive and confidential nature of dealing with asylum applicants. The function of the interpreter is to translate what the applicants outlines to the interviewer. Interpreters are aware of their role, that is, an interpreter is a conduit of information without being participative. I would advise the Deputy that I am satisfied with the interpretation facilities currently provided.

My Department is currently preparing to go to tender for the provision of interpretation facilities in the asylum division for the purpose of complying with EU procurement directives.

Ceist:

136 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the measures taken to ensure that asylum seekers should be informed prior to interview that interpretation is available; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2300/99]

All applicants for refugee status are given a copy of the procedures for processing asylum claims in Ireland together with an information leaflet in their own language, where possible.

The information leaflet details the applicant's entitlements and obligations and other useful information, such as relevant contact names and addresses. It also advises the applicant that every effort will be made to provide him/her with an interpreter where necessary and possible.

These documents are currently available in 15 different languages.
