Vol. 499 No. 2

Written Answers. - Dublin Traffic.

Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

36 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his Department has requested an estimate of the cost to Irish business of the worsening gridlock in Dublin city traffic; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26128/98]

Estimates made by the Dublin Transportation Office indicate that the cost of congestion in the Dublin region is of the order of £500 million per annum. This figure is based on the loss of time spent in traffic queues, as opposed to free flow traffic conditions, and does not take into account other costs associated with congestion such as increased environmental damage and higher vehicle operating costs.
