Vol. 499 No. 2

Written Answers. - Water Quality.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

47 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will make a statement on the outcome of the meeting between his Department and representatives of the EU's Environment Directorate General in November 1998 regarding the implementation of EU directives on water quality; and if his attention has been drawn to criticisms of the recent anti-pollution package made by the Cara Mask Angling Federation. [26468/98]

A meeting took place in November 1998 between officials of my Department, the Department of Agriculture and Food and the European Commission in relation to implementation by Ireland of EU directives on water quality, in particular the Dangerous Substances Directive, 76/464/EEC. There was a generally positive outcome to the meeting. The Commission officials acknowledged the comprehensive nature of the wide range of measures being taken in the context of my Department's strategy to reduce phosphorus inputs to waters.

I am aware of the issues of the Cara Mask Angling Federation. In this regard I refer to the reply to Question No. 260 of 1 December 1998 in which I outlined details of the strategy and of positive progress already achieved in terms of water quality improvements in Lough Derg, Lough Conn and the River Shannon and reductions in the usage of phosphorus chemical fertilisers.
