Vol. 499 No. 2

Written Answers. - Industrial Development.

Liam Aylward

Ceist:

68 Mr. Aylward asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the efforts being made between her Department and the State agencies to secure an industry for Kilkenny city and county in view of the recent loss of 40 jobs at Kilkenny textile mills and the urgency to attract immediate alternative employment; when an announcement will be made on a suitable enterprise on the new industrial site at Kilkenny city; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2324/99]

I can assure the Deputy that a determined drive is under way by IDA Ireland to achieve a better regional distribution of overseas industry. In this regard, I understand that in order to enhance the attractiveness of Kilkenny to potential investors, IDA Ireland has developed a 50 acre site in the area and construction of a 25,000 sq ft advance factory on that site is under way. This facility is being promoted to potential overseas investors, particularly in the healthcare industry.

In addition, construction of a 20,000 sq ft office building, on the same site, is planned to begin shortly. This facility will be promoted to overseas clients in the international services industry.

While IDA Ireland will continue to vigorously promote Kilkenny to potential overseas investors, decisions on where to locate are made by the potential clients themselves.

Enterprise Ireland is also conscious of the need to secure employment for Kilkenny and is currently reviewing its strategy, under my direction, with a view to further developing indigenous industry in the area.
