This will involve measuring the effects of current arrangements in public hospitals, particularly in terms of access to care for public versus private patients in public hospitals and relating these to the objectives of the health strategy.

Purpose of Project and nature of work:

In September 1998 the Department engaged the National Standards Association of Ireland (NSAI) to carry out inspections to assess compliance with the European Communities (Medical Devices) Regulations, 1994, on organisations/individuals which have registered with the Department.

The fee agreed for 40 inspections was £10,000 including VAT.

Senior Management Development Programme. In line with the Department's Strategy Statement 1998-2001 “Working for Health and Well-being”, Management Development was highlighted as our priority training requirement for 1998-1999 and the area in which most investment would be made. Our objective is to provide a customised Management Development Programme to all APs, POs and equivalent professional and technical grades over the next year. The principle focus of this programme will be to provide participants with the essential people management and strategic management skills to successfully manage their respective sections in the Department. It is envisaged that between 100 and 120 staff will undertake this programme in the next eleven months.

Ceist:

97 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children the moneys paid to date to any public relations firm consulted by him, his Ministers of State, or his Department since he took office; the arrangements in place to assist him, his Ministers for State and his Department in the area of public relations; and the expenditure his Department is contracted to incur for public relations advice in 1999 together with the moneys earmarked for public relations purposes for 1999. [2331/99]

The information requested by the Deputy in relation to the moneys paid, names of all public relations consultants engaged by me, the Ministers of State, or my Department since taking office is outlined below.

The Drury Communications, public relations contract expired on 31 October 1998, and the tender documentation is currently being prepared for competitive tendering in relation to media consultancy and advice to the Minister and the Department. It is not possible to estimate the cost at this stage. Drury's are currently acting for the Minister on an ad hoc basis.
