Vol. 499 No. 3

Written Answers - Schools Building Projects.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

356 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science if his recent announcement regarding funding for primary school buildings will affect positively the proposal for a new school at Drumphea, County Carlow; when this school will be provided; and the current position in this regard. [2758/99]

On 10 January, I announced a new initiative on State ownership of schools at primary and post-primary levels.

In my statement of 10 January, I indicated that discussions would be held with all interested parties on the operational arrangements for the new initiative. To this end, a working group has been established in my Department and is currently examining the implementation details. When this work has been finalised, I will confirm the position in relation to individual schools, such as Drumphea.
In the meantime, architectural planning for the new building is under way. The project is at the early stages of the planning process. At this stage, it is not feasible for me to give a commencement date for construction. I can assure the Deputy that every effort will be made to expedite the project.
