Vol. 499 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Training.

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin

Ceist:

105 Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has approved the decision of the Garda Síochána to participate in a joint training programme with the RUC; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3095/99]

Discussions involving the State Department in Washington, the Director of the FBI, the RUC Chief Constable and the Garda Commissioner resulted in a joint training programme initiative for members of the Garda Síochána and the RUC. The training programme is in three phases totalling 17 days duration in all and is intended to develop leadership skills among selected middle management personnel in the two police forces, with a view, in particular, to improving methods of developing and maintaining community confidence in both forces.

I am supportive of this programme particularly in the light of its emphasis on community policing.
