Vol. 500 No. 1

Written Answers - Grant Assistance.

Gerry Reynolds

Ceist:

96 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the reason the IDA has requested Ballinmore Textiles Limited to repay grant assistance; the reason the same policy has not been used in the case of Fruit of the Loom; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3467/99]

I am informed that a grant agreement existed between IDA Ireland and Ballinamore Textiles under which the company had to comply with certain conditions. One condition of the grant agreement was that if the company ceased to function the grant liability would become due. As the company closed in April 1998, IDA Ireland sought repayment of outstanding grant liabilities. It is the policy of IDA to claim any money owned under the grant liability clause which is contained in every legal agreement and the same policy was implemented with Fruit of the Loom.
