I believe that the EU satellite monitoring system, which will come into force from 1 January 2000 will significantly enhance our ability to monitor and control the fishing activities and catches of all large fishing vessels irrespective of nationality in waters around the Irish coast on a realtime basis.
The introduction of satellite monitoring will also make even more effective use of the resources we devote to inspections at sea and on land and aerial surveillance of fisheries activity in our waters.
