Vol. 500 No. 3

Written Answers. - Charitable Organisations.

John Gormley

Ceist:

101 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to a media report (details supplied) to the effect that the country has a large, well-off, powerful and unaccountable charity sector; his views in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3882/99]

I assume the Deputy is referring to the plans the Government has to regulate fundraising for charitable and other purposes. In reply, I refer the Deputy to my answer to Question No. 53 of 4 February 1999, in which I indicated that the introduction of legislation in this area is a priority item in the work programme for my Department and work on the heads of a Bill will be advanced as quickly as possible in the light of the disposal of other legislative priorities. I have nothing further to add to that reply.
