Vol. 500 No. 5

Written Answers. - Speed Cameras.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

151 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, there are to change the law in relation to the use of speed cameras by the gardaí in view of a recent judgment by Judge Windle; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4485/99]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the judgment referred to by the Deputy in relation to the use of speed cameras is being examined by the gardaí. This examination includes a review of the effectiveness of the legislation allowing for the use of speed cameras in the prosecution of speeding offences.

If the Garda review identifies a need for legislative change, the matter will be brought by my Department to the attention of the Minister for the Environment and Local Government who is responsible for all road traffic legislation.
