Paul Bradford

Ceist:

37 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he raised with the Israeli government or any other government in the region the recent attacks on Irish troops serving with the UN in the Lebanon. [4387/99]

A very strong protest has been lodged with the Israeli Ambassador following the recent attacks on members of the Irish contingent attached to UNIFIL resulting in the wounding of two Irish soldiers. In the course of the protest, the Israeli Ambassador was informed that the Irish Government viewed the incident as most serious, that the pattern of shell strikes clearly indicated that the UN position was the identified target, that this indiscriminate attack by Israeli forces and their associates marks a very dangerous change of policy in their operations in South Lebanon and that it was very fortunate that in this instance there was no loss of life. The ambassador was asked to bring the contents of the protest to the attention of his authorities.
