Vol. 500 No. 6

Written Answers. - National Cancer Strategy.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

103 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Health and Children the levels of cancers recorded in the national register of cancers in the district or area that includes Leixlip, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4645/99]

The national cancer registry collects data relating to cancer on a county basis at present. Data for smaller areas such as Leixlip are not currently available, but the registry plans to produce this information in the future. The following table summarises the number of cases of cancer in Kildare for the years 1994 and 1995 combined. The figures show the number of cases registered in respect of Kildare and the percentage of the number that would be expected, based on national rates and the age composition of the population in Kildare. Research in relation to cancer is an integral part of the national cancer strategy. I am committed to implementing this strategy and I have allocated a total of £10.79 million pounds for the further development of cancer services in 1999.
