Vol. 500 No. 7

Written Answers. - Community Policing.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

363 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has satisfied himself with the operation of the community policing scheme; if it is operating satisfactorily in the Whitehall district of Dublin; the plans, if any, he has to develop this scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5123/99]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that, like all operational matters, community policing is kept under constant review by the Commissioner. As part of this process, a formal review of community policing was recently undertaken by the Garda authorities to ensure that its effectiveness and efficiency is maintained and improved. As a result of this review, a number of policy changes were recommended. I understand that the Commissioner is currently examining these recommendations, and having examined them, will make any changes to existing policy which he deems necessary.

I am assured by the Garda authorities that community policing in the Whitehall area of Dublin is operating effectively and efficiently and is meeting the needs of the community. The local gardaí and the local community are in continuous contact. These links can be informal, through, for example residents associations; and formal, through such initiatives as Neighbourhood Watch, Business Watch, Campus Watch and the Garda Schools Programme.
