367 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the names, home addresses and principal occupations of persons appointed by him to prison visiting committees; the prisons to which they have been nominated in each case; the distance from the home to the prison in each case; the rate of travel payable per mile or kilometre; and the annual average number of meetings of each visiting committee. The attached table sets out details of the individuals appointed by me to prison visting committees since I came into office. It is not the practice to furnish members' personal details.
The rate of travel payable for members of visiting committees travelling to prisons is the standard Civil Service mileage rates.
Each committee visits the prison monthly to meet and inspect the prison as a group. Two members are designated by the committee to make unannounced visits to the prison or to visit at the request of a prisoner or prison authorities. Each committee makes one visit per year to another prison in the State as a comparative exercise.
