Vol. 500 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

380 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science if retired teachers are being re-employed as substitute teachers in some schools; his views on whether this practice is acceptable; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4887/99]

The appointment of primary teachers is a matter for the managerial authorities of primary schools.

Historically, a number of retired teachers have been appointed to substitute teaching positions. Their experience, their availability at relatively short notice and the generally brief duration of substitute assignments renders retired teachers as suitable persons for appointment to positions as substitute teachers.
