Vol. 500 No. 7

Written Answers. - Disadvantaged Status.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

416 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science the number and names of post primary schools granted disadvantaged status in each of the past three years; and the plans, if any, he has in relation to the disadvantaged scheme for 1999 and future years. [5314/99]

There has been no expansion of the disadvantaged scheme at second level in the last three years.

I recently announced a major new funding initiative for the education sector. As a core element of this, a total of 225 new second level teachers will be appointed this year. These new teachers will enable a move towards the provision of an automatic remedial resource in all schools and the extension of the home-school-community liaison scheme to all schools currently designated as disadvantaged.

The authorities of second level schools will shortly be notified of the approved teacher allocations, including the allocation, where appropriate, in respect of home-school-community liaison, for the 1999-2000 school year.
