Vol. 500 No. 7

Written Answers. - Motor Vehicle Regulations.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

116 Ms Shortall asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the regulations in place in relation to the safety of electric windows in cars; if she has satisfied herself that they are adequate enough to deal with potential hazards; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5110/99]

Motor vehicles, including components, are subject to the provisions of regulations made under the Road Traffic Acts. These regulations are the responsibility of the Minister for the Environment and Local Government.

A proposal for an EU Directive, which would include provisions relating to power-operated windows in the context of the EU motor vehicle type approval system, has been submitted by the Commission to the Council [O.J. No. C 149, 15.5.98, p.10] and is currently under examination by a Council working group.
