Vol. 501 No. 1

Written Answers. - Genetically Engineered Organisms.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

90 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the discussions, if any, he has had with his European counterparts in relation to the ending of the moratorium in 1999 on licensing the genetically engineered bovine somatotropin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1548/99]

In my reply on 27 January 1999 to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 357 and 358 about recombinant bovine somatotropin, I stated that the European Commission has not yet come forward with the results of the assessment it was asked by the Council to conduct concerning the use of the substance, nor with any specific proposals concerning its status after the end of this year. Consequently, the opportunity for discussions in this regard with my European counterparts has not yet arisen.
